Dental Cleanings

a) Prophylaxis

i) A dental prophylaxis (a.k.a. prophy) is the removal of plaque, calculus and stains from the teeth. A prophy aids to control irritations and prevent others from occurring.

b) Scaling and root planing

i) Scaling and root planing is often referred to as a "deep cleaning” as the clinician is cleaning the tooth structure covered by gum tissue (but not bone).

ii) This non-surgical procedure involves removal of plaque and calculus from the teeth as well as the roots.

iii) Scaling and root planing is needed when the roots become contaminated with toxins and microorganisms.

iv) Some patients prefer to be numb during this deep cleaning.
